Okay…so most of you have these details but some don’t and I didn’t want to miss anyone so here is the latest with my little sister…..
She was scheduled for radiation today. That was cancelled yesterday. Her blood test was red-flagged and radiation was cancelled. When the doctor called her to explain why (and let me tell you the wait was terrible for most) he informed her that she couldn’t have the radiation because a little baby was growing inside her. YES ..she is pregnant.
So, that kind of threw a wrench into the plan of radiation because now they can’t do it until the pregnancy is done.
What does that mean?? Well, there are pros and cons from both situations. If the radiation was done today she would be on the road to being cancer free. Now, what does waiting do the cancer? And, so on….I know lots of if’s!!
Here is the newest plan and it could change…but I am just letting you know.
They think she is due around the end of February or so. She will see a baby doctor specialist next week and have an ultra sound. Then, some planning will go into having a planned induction or c-section. She is leaning towards an induction. She will spend a few hours with the baby and then they will do the first round of radiation then. It sounds okay until you find out that the baby or most people can’t be around her for 4 days after this treatment. So, we have all called dibs on who gets to take care of the new baby. But, still thinking about Chris here….it sounds so hard to be away from a brand new baby that soon. The doctor told Chris that because this has come up a few times in his line of work….most moms say let’s wait two weeks or so and he said it is much harder on them rather than just doing it right at first.
So, at this point that is the plan. Now, some of you are asking what happened to waiting for 5 months after the delivery.(First plan of action for radiation) Well….her doctor consulted a OB/GYN that he has worked with in the past and he said it will be fine to do it immediately and her doctor said it is needed so whatever cancer is there….can be gone quickly and not given an additional time to grow or do whatever it does…..
She is due around the end of February or beginning of March and we will just get through this. She is happy that she can take her medicine today and sounds much better on the phone. Heather is taking her kids to her right now and so she mentioned that she can’t wait to see them. (The kids have been here with my mom and dad while Chris was to go through the radiation)
We will all just have to pull together and support her tons.
Oh and most people have asked if the baby is okay because she was pregnant during the first initial surgery to remove the thyroid. …. Well, for the most part yes. They will know for sure Monday but she hasn’t done anything yet that would have impacted the baby that badly. And, the funny thing is…Brock was about the same age in her belly when she had her gallbladder out. She has been there done that….so they say.
